Kintampo Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Ghana, located in the Bono East Region. It is situated on the Pumpum River, a tributary of the Black Volta, about 4 kilometers north of the town of Kintampo.

History

Kintampo Falls, also known as Sanders Falls during colonial times, has a rich history. The waterfall was discovered in the 18th century and designated as a tourist site in 1992. The falls have three main drops, with the longest drop measuring 25 meters (82 feet). The water cascades down a series of steps and rocky formations, creating a beautiful and serene environment.

In 2017, a tragic incident occurred when a large tree fell on a group of students during a storm, resulting in several fatalities.

Following this, the falls were temporarily closed for safety assessments and renovations. The site was reopened in 2019 with improved safety measures, including a canopy walkway.

Atmosphere

Kintampo Falls offers a festive and lively atmosphere. The area is popular with locals who come for picnics and relaxation. The falls are surrounded by lush greenery, predominantly mahogany trees, some of which grow beyond 40 meters. The sound of the cascading water and the cool breeze create a refreshing and peaceful environment.

The falls are divided into three stages. The first stage features water spouts in large rocks, backed by a cave housing a colony of bats. The second stage has water tumbling down behind several large rocks, while the third stage involves a descent of 173 steps to the base of the main waterfall. Visitors can swim or bathe at the base of the falls, making it a popular spot for cooling off.

Attraction to tourists

Kintampo Falls is a major tourist attraction in Ghana. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the falls, take guided tours, and learn about the history and significance of the site. The canopy walkway offers a unique perspective of the falls and the surrounding forest.

The falls are also a great resting place for travellers between Kumasi and Tamale or Mole National Park. Nearby, in the town of Kintampo, there is a small monument marking the geographic center of Ghana.
